After the Paramvir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra is India’s second-highest military honour. It is given for heroic deeds performed in front of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air. Since the medal’s establishment on January 26th, 1950, more than 200 personnel have received it. The Maha Vir Chakra is a spherical medallion made of bronze with a five-pointed star in the middle. The Indian state flag appears on the medal’s obverse, and the words “Maha Vir Chakra” are written in Devanagari script on the back. The medal’s ribbon is green, with an orange stripe running through the middle.

In 1947-1948, during the Indo-Pakistani War, the Maha Vir Chakra was first presented. It has been given out multiple times since then, including during the Sino-Indian War in 1962, the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, and the Kargil War in 1999.

Some notable recipients of the Maha Vir Chakra include Major Somnath Sharma, who received the medal posthumously for his bravery during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948, Captain Rakesh Sharma, who received the medal for his courage during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and Lieutenant Colonel Arun Khetarpal, who received the medal posthumously for his courage during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Vir Chakra

The Vir Chakra, given for acts of courage in battle, is the third-highest military decoration in India. The Sanskrit word “vir,” which means “valiant or heroic,” inspired the medal’s creation in 1950. It is given to members of the Indian Armed Forces of all ranks and branches. Personnel must have displayed courage in the face of the enemy on land, at sea, or in the air to qualify. The award could be made posthumously. It is one of only two Indian military awards that can be given posthumously, the other being the Param Vir Chakra.

A 1.375-inch-diameter bronze medal with a circular shape is called the Vir Chakra (3.49 cm). The obverse features a wreath of laurel leaves around a five-pointed star in the middle. The words “Yuddh Se Vishva Vikas” are surrounded by the Indian national anthem on the reverse (From War Comes Global Progress). The ribbon measures 1.25 inches (3.18 cm) in width and is green with orange borders.

Shaurya Chakra

The Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest military honour, is given for valorous actions performed on land, at sea, or in the air while the enemy was present. It resembles the American Medal of Honor and the British Victoria Cross. The President of India established the award on January 4th, 1952, as the Ashoka Chakra, Class III. On January 27th, 1967, the Shaurya Chakra was given its new name. At a ceremony held twice a year, the President of India presents the decoration, which may give posthumously. It comprises a gold disc with a circular blue enamel centerpiece that features a relief map of India.

Lotus flowers surround the edge, their curved shapes like rays coming out of the centre. An Ashoka Chakra in relief is depicted in the centre, and 21 spikes are evenly spaced around it. Three victory-related laurels are superimposed over it, and a band with the words “Shaurya Chakra” written in Devanagari script surrounds them. Orange is the ribbon’s closest colour to the wearer’s left shoulder, whereas the other colours are white and green. White denotes peace, orange denotes bravery and sacrifice, and green denotes prosperity.

Shaurya Chakra

The Defense Ministry pays Shaurya Chakra winners a lifetime pension of 10,000 per month. Since independence, 3,522 people have received awards, including 21 deceased honourees. Captain Daniel Valentine Holmes was the first recipient of this honour for his performance during Operation Polo against Pakistan in 1948-49.

Kirti Chakra

India’s national military decoration is the Kirti Chakra. It is “gallantry other than in the face of the enemy.” It comes second among Indian decorations for bravery during peacetime and is considered the equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra. The distinction, which can give to both citizens and members of the armed forces, was established on January 4, 1952. The post-nominal letters “KC” may be used by recipients.

Any commanding officer from a colonel on up, or another officer who has held such a position, may submit a nomination for the award. After receiving approval from a Service Headquarters, the recommendations are subsequently transmitted to the Ministry of Defence for final approval. Joint or combined HQs may issue recommendations when a brave deed occurs during an operation by two or more services.

Kirti Chakra

The medal is a silver circle with lotus blossoms etched on it. In the centre, amid a lotus wreath, the words “KIRTI” and “CHAKRA” are written in Devanagari. A centre, 3mm broad white stripe runs the full length of the dark green ribbon.

Since the award’s introduction in 1952, 43 recipients including one posthumous recipient—have received it. Rakesh Sharma and Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman are the two recipients of the Kirti Chakra who are still alive as of 2017.

Ashoka Chakra

The Ashoka Chakra is India’s highest military honour during times of peace. It is given for “most conspicuous courage, a particularly daring act, or outstanding service to the country.” The honour may give posthumously. It is typically given to members of the Indian armed forces and paramilitaries and comprises a medallion. The Indian President founded the prize on January 4th, 1952. Before independence, Indian citizens received the British George Cross, which this one replaced.

The medal has a 40-mm diameter and is bronze in colour. It has a green enamelled band around the edge with the National Emblem engraved in the centre. The medal’s ribbon is green with a white stripe through the middle of it.

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was the first recipient of the Ashoka Chakra; he was recognised posthumously for his courage during counterterrorism operations in South Kashmir’s Shopian area on August 15th, 2018. When he was slain on May 11th, 2018, after a confrontation with terrorists, he was a member of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles.

Padma Shri

One of India’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Shri, is presented in honour of remarkable performance or service. It comprises a medal and a citation and is given out by the President of India. Since the award’s establishment in 1954, approximately 4,000 people from various fields of endeavor- including science, art, literature, sports, health, social work, and more- have received it.

Some of the most famous figures in Indian history, including Mother Teresa, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Amitabh Bachchan, are on the list of honourees. The distinction is fantastic for the individual and their towns and family. It shows appreciation for their accomplishments and inspiration to keep up the good work toward India’s advancement.

Bharat Ratna

The Bharat Ratna is the Republic of India’s highest civilian honour. It is appreciated for very good work or performance in any human endeavour. Parliamentary legislation established the prize on January 2nd, 1954. The President of India, Rashtrapati Bhavan, frequently hands it to the honorees during a ceremony in the presidential residence. A medal and a certificate of merit, both signed by the President, are given to the winners. Fifty recipients have won awards as of 2020, including 12 posthumous recipients. No Indian nationality is required, but the recipient must have “given remarkable service to India.” The President has discretion over the eligibility requirements, which are not outlined in any formal legislation. The donees are chosen by a committee of distinguished persons from various fields that the prime minister appoints. Republic Day sees the announcement of the nominations, and Republic Day sees additional ceremonies later in the year where the medals are presented to the winners. The prize is open to everyone from any field, and nominations are accepted only by invitation. However, only the nominees chosen by the committee are made public; all other nominations are kept a secret.

Each year, the number of nominees received fluctuates greatly; in 2019, there were over 100 nominations, while in 2020, there were only six. Although there is no maximum number of nominees allowed each year, only up to three nominees will ultimately be chosen as awardees. The majority of recipients historically have been men; as of 2020, just eight women have received the Bharat Ratna. Scientist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman received the award in 1954, and humanitarian Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (better known as Mother Teresa) received the award posthumously in 1980, was the most recent laureate.
